Classical High School

Classical High School is in Providence Rhode Island.continues to rank as one of the highest performing public high schools nationally and its graduate students go on to many of the top and most prominent colleges and universities in the United States. Classical High Schools missoin (SIC) statement is: a demanding college preparatory examination school, serves a diverse community and provides its students with the means to achieve high standards in a rigorous learning environment. Classical encourages its students to pursue academic, artistic, athletic, and personal growth so they will experience success in colleges and universities, and will demonstrate excellence in leadership within the community. (Classical High School, Providence Schools, DATE?). Classical High school's studies of sciences, language, humanities, and arts are very challenging. Also, there are many extracurricular activities, such as academic competitions, field trips, athletics, art presentations, theatre productions, diverse clubs, and music groups\shows. Classical High school is a private school, which means to attend you, must be accepted THIS IS NOT WHAT "PRIVATE SCHOOL" MEANS. CLASSICAL IS A PUBLIC SCHOOL, I.E. PAID FOR BY TAXPAYERS.. The acceptance to Classical High School is determined by an Admissions Committee, which reviews the student profile of each perspective student. The criteria of the Admissions Committee includes the following:

1) CHS Assistant Principal in Charge of Admissions
2) Representative from Central Administration Designated by the Superintendent
3) Representative from the Equity and Access Office
4) Classical High School Faculty Member
5) Director of Guidance
6) 2 Parents
7) Student Representative from the Classical Senior Class

They will evaluate and decide the admissions. Transferring is also allowed in the spring of the student’s current grade (Classical High School, Providence Schools). The current Principal is Mrs. Cheryl Gomes, the current Assistant Principals are: Mrs. Beth Ann Battey and Dr. Nicolau R. Amaral. (Classical High School, Providence Schools).

Classical High School is in the Providence school district. The student teacher ratio is, 26:1, for special education students it’s 10:1. For special Ed students in a 230-day has 6:1 ratio. In the year 2000, there were 45,277 students in Providence students, 333 teachers, 2,141 Males, and 2,145 females. The Providence students vary in ethnic backgrounds. 58% Hispanic, 13% white, 22% African American, 6% Asian, 1% Native American. There are 8 schools in the district, 4,286 The type of schooling in the district is 5.8% public charter, 85.1% other public schools, 8.9% Nonpublic, and .2% are home schooled, the attendance of student’s in the district is 89%, dropout rate is 29%. Teachers with emergency certification are only 2% in the district. There are 20% of classes not taught by a highly qualified teacher. Teachers take a total of 6% of time out of class. Out of 16% of ESL students 8% are bilingual. Per Pupil expenditures are a total of $14, 652 IS THIS HIGH?. Out of that $6,653 are for instruction, $812 is for leadership, $2,354 is for operations, $3,122 is for Instructional support, and finally $1,712 is for other commitments. When it comes to the test scores, the percentage of students reaching proficiency is lower than the amount of students not reaching proficiency. 18% of schools in the Providence district were in need of improvement in the first year. Cost of rent in Providence is $1,115 in 2006; also the percent of income-eligible children enrolled in the Food Stamp Program is 73%. Along the lines of health in Providence, that has also improved and increased over the years. The number of children under the age of 19 receiving medical assistance is 90,731. Safety has also increased; child abuse and neglect rate per 1,000 children was 11.8 in Providence during 2006. In regards to education in the district the high school attendance rate in 2006 was 83%, suspensions per 100 students was 46, and high school graduation rate in providence in 2006 was 71%. Crime is also important to know about a school district. The total suspensions due to alcohol related were 5 in middle school, 2 in high school. Assault of student was 188 for middle school, 82 for high school. Assault of teacher’s were 39 middle school, 25 high school. Disorderly conduct was 2,958 for middle schools, 652 for high schools. And weapon possession in middle schools was 57 and high schools 28. District transportation is very important. Approximatley 2,737 regular education high school students receive a monthly RIPTA bus pass. 5,677 elementary, 2,185 middle school, 128 special education high school students, and 2,106 private school children take the yellow bus to and from school. Sports in Providence district are also good to know. There are 1,500 athletes, 66 teams, and 200 students that are participating in alternative athletic programs in the district (District Reports, Information Works!). In a high school health is very important, a survey was done at Classical High School to responded to the following to see if they have done them in the last 30 days. Less than 20% smoked at least one day, about 10% have used chewing tobacco or snuff, more than 20% have used illegal drugs, and a little over 40% drank alcohol at least once. ARE THESE VALUE HIGH OR LOW? CITATION? Classical High school’s SAT scores are above that of the state in each category. In mathematics the average at Classical is 516, Verbal 516, and the percentage of seniors taking tests was 100% (Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Information Services, School Report Cards). From gender, to ethnicity, and disabilities, at Classical High School each category had over 61% of students reaching proficiency. Classical High School is classified as High Performing and Sustaining when it comes to the No Child Left Behind (Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Information Services, School Report Cards). More than 80% of parents agree or strongly agree that the community supports this school. Teachers are less than 20% satisfied or very satisfied with the extend to which parents and the community are supportive of the school and its program. Students’ report that more than 30% of them are home unsupervised 3 or more hours a day, 3 or more days a week. Parents report also that approximately 25% of the time Classical High school contacts them if their child does something well or improves, 65% say the school contacts them if their child is having a problem, 57% says that the school responds to their concerns and requests within a reasonable time. 62% of parents have had a parents-teacher conference, and 42% asks parents to volunteer at school. 65% of teachers at Classical High School also strongly agree or agree that parental involvement in school govemance is essential to effective education. When it comes to suspensions at Classical High School are per 100 students enrolled is 3.2. Classical High school is a high quality school were high quality learning will be achieved. Students are high performing on standardized tests and perform well in the classroom. They involved in extracurricular activities, athletic events, and academic debates. Athletics include Baseball, Football, Track and Field Palazzo, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls, Girls Volleyball, Girls Field Hockey, Softball, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys Soccer, and Girls Soccer (Classical High School Providence Schools). Extracurricular activities at Classical High School include: Academic Decathlon, Science Olympiad, Gay-Straight Alliance, Italian Club, Yearbook, Math Team, Asian Club, Brotherhood, Comedy Club, Book Club, Jewish Student Union, Film Club, Social Action Committee, Manga Club, Chess Club, Music Club,Theatre Company & Technical Crew, and Mock Trial. Classical encourages its students to pursue academic, artistic, athletic and personal growth so they will experience success in colleges and universities and will demonstrate excellence and leadership within the community (Classical High School, Providence Schools).
